The houses are built with large rooms obtained in the tunnels dug into the tuff. The tuff blocks resulting from the excavation were used for the construction of the external walls of the houses. Urbanistically, the old city of Matera is made up of an intertwining of small streets and alleys reminiscent of Arab cities.
