The Piazza dei Miracoli, whose name was coined by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio incorporates a series of spectacular buildings built in the Romanesque period. The peculiarity of the religious buildings in the square is that they are all built with marble from San Giuliano, near Pisa and the white one from the Apuan Alps. The buildings were built in an area still peripheral to the city and in the past already used by the Etruscans for the construction of some buildings. The current shape of the square is given by the last intervention that took place at the end of the 19th century which led to the demolition of some buildings to give more breath to the monuments in the Piazza dei Miracoli.
