Ancient city of Matera in Basilicata, with typical houses carved out of the rock. The city is characterized by narrow and steep streets with an urban layout that recalls the Arab cities. The beauty of Matera is also given by the chromatic uniformity given by the ocher colored tuff stone. The stone dug to create the underground rooms was used to build the parts of houses above ground and to pave the pedestrian streets. La città è caratterizzata da strette e ripide stradine con una conformazione urbanistica che ricorda le città arabe. La bellezza di Matera è data anche dall’uniformità cromatica data dalla pietra di tufo color ocra. La pietra scavata per creare gli ambienti sotterranei veniva utilizzata per costruire le parti di abitazioni fuori terra e per pavimentare le strade pedonali.
