The palace was the residence of Francesco III d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio who obtained the fiefdom of Varese from Maria Theresa of Austria. On the façade overlooking the gardens there is a sundial surmounted by the sculpture of an eagle, symbol of Austria. The park is frequented daily by the inhabitants of Varese.
