Colonnata, Carrara, Tuscany, Italy. Church bell tower built with white marble pebbles. The ancient village, famous for its lard, is located in the heart of the Carrara marble quarries. The whole town of Colonnata is built with white Carrara marble stones taken from the nearby quarries. In the photo you can see the background consisting of a cascade of marble debris, called "ravaneto". Colonnata, Carrara, Toscana, Italia. Campanile della chiesa costruita con ciottoli di marmo bianco. L'antico borgo, famoso per il suo lardo, si trova nel cuore delle cave di marmo di Carrara. Tutto il paese di Colonnata è costruito con pietre in marmo bianco di Carrara prelevato dalle vicinissime cave. Nella foto si nota lo sfondo costituito da una cascata di detriti di marmo, detto “ravaneto”. Oggi i ravaneti sono quasi scomparsi in quanto i sassi di marmo sono stati prelevati per la produzione di carbonato di calcio utilizzato nell’industria chimica.
